The United Nations has pledged to work with the Vietnamese government to provide care and protection for the country’s at-risk children.

Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children Marta Santos Pais made the statement in a press conference in Vietnam on Wednesday after meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam in Hanoi on Monday.

At the briefing, Santos Pais emphasized the dangers of child abuse, both physically via the Internet, and suggested solutions to prevent violence against children.

She commended Vietnam’s achievements in protecting and caring for children as well as the country’s policy and institutional improvements, particularly the adoption of the revised Law on Child Protection, Care, and Education.

She also attended the fourth installment of the ASEAN Children Forum in Hanoi, which concluded on Wednesday, to discuss the issue of violence against children in Vietnam.

At the forum, Santos Pais met with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam and noted the progress made by Vietnam in the field of child protection with the recent adoption of the Child Law and the creation of the Family and Juvenile Court.

Deputy PM Dam thanked the UN for its support for Vietnam in the protection and care of its children.

At the forum, delegates debated important topics related to children’s rights, including the protection against sexual violence, protection and care for children with disabilities, and protection from online predators.

The delegates recommended that nations create safe environments for children to learn and play, and hoped that their governments will prevent and create solutions to purge the region of child labor, child abuse, and child trafficking.
