Vietnam carrier’s employees fined for refusing disabled passenger

Vietnam carrier’s employees fined for refusing disabled passenger

Saturday, April 04, 2015, 14:01 GMT+7

Two employees of low-cost Vietnamese carrier VietJet Air have been fined for refusing to serve a passenger with disability, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said on Friday.

Le Vu Nhiem and Le Nguyen Minh were both subject to a VND5 million (US$233) fine for violating the air transportation law, the CAAV said in a statement.

On Thursday, Nguyen Thi Van posted on her Facebook page, under the name Van Theresa, that she had been refused to board a VietJet Air flight bound for Hanoi in the Da Nang International Airport in central Vietnam because she has a severe disability.

Van, whose legs are paralyzed, did not encounter any problem when she boarded the Hanoi flight to Da Nang, so the boarding refusal for her return flight was unreasonable, she said in the status update.

Nhiem and Tuyet refused to complete the boarding procedure for Van because she cannot move on her own.

The passenger had to buy another ticket to return to Hanoi on a Vietnam Airlines flight, which departed at 10:00 pm, whereas she could have left the central city at 5:45 pm with the VietJet Air flight.

The Central Airports Authority looked into the case after receiving the complaint and eventually ruled that Nhiem and Tuyet violated several regulations, including a VietJet Air policy.

The Central Airports Authority thus slapped the highest civil penalty for the violation on the two employees.
