Politics:

-- Prime Minister will chair a meeting on February 10 to settle the land clearance scam in Tien Lang District of the northern Hai Phong City.

-- State President Truong Tan Sang is to make his first official visit to Laos since his taking up his post from February 9-12 to celebrate the Vietnam – Laos Year of Friendship 2012.

-- Phu Yen Province Police has arrested 9 men of a reactionary organization and seized different kinds of weapons as 19 detonators.

Society:

-- Water of Tien River running through provinces of Dong Thap, Vinh Long and Tien Giang has recently become more and more contaminated, according to results of surveys of local Departments of Natural Resources and Environment.

Business:

-- Japanese nuclear physicist Arima Akito told Tuoi Tre during a press conference of Vietnam – Japan Relations that Vietnam can shorten the training period for its nuclear staff to just a year instead of 2-3 years as planned.

-- US Ex-Im Bank chairman Fred Hochberg said his bank will give more priority and credit support to medium- and small-sized enterprises of Vietnam in 2012.

-- Vietnam received 630,000 foreign tourists in January, up 25 percent against the same period last year, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

-- Price of caged chicken for meat in southern Vietnam has recently made sharp increase, up to VND36,000 (US$1.7) a kilogram yesterday from VND20,000 two weeks ago.

-- International accounting firm Ernst & Young has made a prediction that Vietnam GDP will grow up by 6-6.5 percent in 2012.

Sports:

-- Provincial tennis team Becamex Binh Duong left for the US yesterday for a two-month tour of friendly competition at the invitation of the Idaho University, US. The team will return to Vietnam on April 4.

-- Former center back Pham Van Lam of the South Vietnam’s national football team died on Sunday of long-lasting diseases, aged 70. He and his team won the championship title of the Merdeka 1966. Burial ceremony will take place at 6:00am on Feb.8.
