Poachers have cut off the tails of two tame elephants at a tourism site in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, forest protection officials said Wednesday.
They said when their mahout led the animals to a stream for bathing, he found each had lost 30 centimeters from their tails.
The three-ton pachyderms carry tourists around Prenn Waterfall in Lam Dong Province.
Besides tusks, poachers also cut off elephant tails for their hair to make jewelry, particularly rings, because of a belief the hair brings good luck.
“Their lives may not be threatened if their tails are cut off but look at the poor animals without tails,” Phan Dac Mau Dai, their owner, lamented.
