3 football referees suspended for dishonesty

Vietnam’s football governing body VFF has decided to suspend three referees for the upcoming season and caution three others for poor and dishonest refereeing which sparked public protests and helped a team avoid relegation.

Do Quoc Hoai of Hanoi “systematically committed mistakes” while officiating games in the top-flight V-League, the VFF said after the national referees’ board blamed him of inaccuracy.

Tran Cong Trong of Ben Tre and Nguyen Van Quyet of Thai Binh showed “unfairness that badly affected the results of games and affected the prestige of referees.”

The three who were cautioned are Vo Minh Tri, Ngo Quoc Hung, and Dao Van Cuong.

The penalties were also recommended in supervisors’ reports on matches, the VFF said.

At a meeting of the national referees’ board in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday, five referees and five assistant referees were recommended for the Best Referees Award for 2010-11.

Earlier, VFF chairman Nguyen Trong Hy had watched the Hai Phong – Hoa Phat Hanoi game August 22 and concluded that Trong “made several mistakes” and “was weak in officiating a game and coordinating with his assistants on the field.”

Vicem Hai Phong won six points unfairly with the help of the referees, he added.

The team escaped relegation after finishing 12th out of 14 teams, thanks to a better goal difference than the demoted team in 13th place, Dong Tam Long An.

The goal difference had to be resorted to after they also tied on the head-to-head results.
