TV right dispute rages on

Digital TV service provider AVG continues to demand compensations from TV station VTC for filming and broadcasting live the match between Vissai Ninh Binh and Dong Thap on January 1.

According to AVG, by broadcasting the match, VTC violated the 20-year agreement of exclusive TV rights AVG signed with the Vietnam Football Federation in late 2010.

However, according to the federation’s partner VPF, which is in charge of marketing and sales and organization of top football leagues in Vietnam, this deal has been voided because it violated Vietnam’s sport law.

“AVG demands VTC to make a public apology on local media […] and stop the violation,” AVG said in its latest dispatch.

Addressing the issue, VTC vice director Vu Quang Huy told Tuoi Tre that AVG might be confused.

“VTC had received a document from VPF, the organizer of the Super League to allow VTC to broadcast the match and others,” Huy said.

Talking about the issue, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism spokesman To Van Dong said yesterday the three sides should take it to court.

“If the sides can’t sit together to find out a solution, the ministry advises them to take it to a court,” Dong said.

VPF Board of Director’s vice director Nguyen Duc Kien also said he expected to take the issue to court. But AVG CEO Pham Nhat Vu told Tuoi Tre that he hadn’t thought of settling the issue in a court.
