V-League loses fans, sees fewer goals

The 2010 V-League, which wrapped up last Sunday, saw a decline in two key numbers: the number of goals scored and fan turnout.

There were only 513 goals in the 26 rounds of matches, 35 fewer than in 2009, or 2.81 goals per game compared to 3.01 last year.

Only 1.5 million spectators turned up for the season’s 182 matches, or an average of 8,300 per game, compared to almost 1.9 million last year.

However, the game seemed to become slightly cleaner, with players getting fewer cards. There were 820 yellow cards and 44 red cards, down from 845 and 52.

Argentine striker Merlo Gaston of SHB Danang was the top scorer with 19 goals. He had also top-scored last year with 15 goals, the same as Military Zone 4’s Brazilian-born striker Lazaro.

The V-League is played on a home-and-away round robin format.

Hanoi T&T dethroned SHB Danang to become the champions this year.
