Vietnam finished the 26th SEA Games that closed Tuesday at third place in the medal standing, winning 96 gold medals, 92 silver and 100 bronze medals, behind host Indonesia with 182 golds and Thailand, 107.
Its last 8 gold medals were won on Monday, in fin swimming, wushu, aerobic and chess.
Tran Bao Thu won the men’s 400m surface fin swimming and his fellow team members Nguyen Thi Quynh, Truc Linh, Huyen Trang and Ky Duyen clinched a gold in the women’s 4x100m surface fin swimming.
Thu broke the SEA Games record, clocking 3 minutes 9:28 seconds – 3:32 seconds faster than the previous result.
Three gold medals in Wushu were bagged home by Wushu fighter Nguyen Thi Bich in the women’s 49kg event, Tan Thi Ly in women’s 56kg and Pham Van Hau in the men’s 56kg.
The sixth gold medal was captured in gymnastics-aerobics by Nguyen Tien Phuong, Vu Ba Dong and Tran Thi Thu Ha in the mixed trios event.
The last two gold medals went to two female chess players Nguyen Thi Mai Hung and Nguyen Thi Nhu Y in the standard and blitz events respectively.
With the result, the Vietnamese chess team secured six out of nine gold medals at the 2011 SEA Games.
In late Tuesday, Vietnam lost all two final games in men’s and women’s futsal and added home two silver medals.
