VPF forwards TV rights war to Prime Minister

After meeting with officials of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Wednesday, VPF company petitioned an official letter to Prime Minister to draw in other agencies to settle the issue.

VPF chairman Vo Quoc Thang requested the government to order the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Information and Communications to verify the legal base of the contract.

The yesterday move came a few days after the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism had set up an inspection team to look into the legal basis of the contract in 15 days.

VPF has kept on their view that the contract signed in late 2011 between Vietnam Football Federation and AVG violates Vietnam’s law, because VFF had not asked for the permission of clubs, which are also owners of the broadcasting rights, before making the contract.

Moreover, AVG had not been licensed to join the TV market in Vietnam before it signed the contract.

In the letter to the PM, VPF also suggested that the government allow VTV, VTC and other local television stations to broadcast the football matches which are managed by the company.

During the meeting with the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, VPF had suggested that all Super League football matches from the third round should be reported on central and local television stations, as the broadcasting rights’ owner has not been determined by relevant agencies.

VPF disagreed with the official letter the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism sent to VFF and local authorities asking them to respect the VFF – AVG TV rights contract.

The letter regulated that any television studios wishing to cover the football matches must have permission from AVG.

A VPF representative told Tuoi Tre after the meeting that the company asked government inspectors for help if the inspection conducted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism approves the legal basis of the contract.
