A 57-year-old man died and 18 others were hospitalized in the northern Vietnamese province of Thai Binh due to suspected food poisoning after they ate goat blood pudding at pre-wedding parties last week, the provincial Department of Health’s food safety sub-department reported on Monday.

The sub-department said it had made a report on the incident in Thai Binh City of the namesake province.

In particular, a local household held a party with some 120 guests at noon on May 1.

During the party, many dishes were served, including goat blood pudding.

The goat blood and meat had been transported to Thai Binh from Ninh Binh Province, also in northern Vietnam.

The household held another party on the afternoon of May 1 and another one day later.

At 4:00 pm on Saturday last week, Pham Trong Thuan, a local resident, exhibited symptoms of a slight fever, coughing, shortness of breath, and pain in his right flank, so he was rushed to the Thai Binh General Hospital.

As his condition worsened, he was moved to Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi at 8:00 pm the same day.

However, he died the next day.

On Monday, many people who had attended the pre-wedding parties had their health checked at the Thai Binh General Hospital.

Eight of them said they showed symptoms of fever, digestive disorders, and stomachache after eating the goat blood pudding on May 1 and wanted to be transferred to Bach Mai Hospital.

After visiting Bach Mai Hospital, six were released from the hospital, while the other two are receiving treatment there.

Ten others also declared pain in their heads, necks, and shoulders after eating the goat blood pudding, so they were admitted to the Thai Binh General Hospital.

The Thai Binh food safety sub-department is coordinating with the medical center in Thai Binh City and other relevant agencies to investigate the cause of the incident.
