Provinces and cities in northern and north-central Vietnam will likely experience heavy rains from Tuesday till the weekend, the national weather agency said on Monday.

Several parts in the regions could see showers and scattered thunderstorms especially on Tuesday, with rainfall forecast to reach between 10mm and 30mm.

These weather conditions may hit a wider scale of the regions through Thursday, during which the precipitation will possibly vary between 70mm and 130mm in northern mountainous areas, according to the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting.

Downpours and showers could continue to dampen the regions from Saturday night until Monday next week.

The national weather center warned about an extremely high risk of hail, wind gusts, and lightning when it rains, adding that residents should take precautionary measures against flooding in low-lying, riverside, and urban areas, as well as landslides and flash floods in mountainous locations.

On Monday, the national steering committee for natural disaster prevention and control asked local authorities of the northern mountainous provinces to stay updated on the latest weather forecast news to promptly inform residents of unexpected weather conditions and take preventive measures.

Authorities also have to dispatch forces to vulnerable areas to stay ready for evacuation operations and cope with the aftermath of possible weather-related incidents.

Reports from several northern mountainous provinces such as Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Dien Bien, and Tuyen Quang showed that torrential rains accompanied by whirlwinds and hail last weekend left four residents of Ha Giang and Cao Bang injured.

More than 2,000 local houses had their roofs blown away, 12 education and healthcare facilities were damaged, and over 240 hectares of farming land were affected.

In the wee hours of Monday, hail and thunderstorms took a heavy toll on 166 houses in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai, with two of them completely collapsing.

Two local schools and an administrative building were also ravaged.

Meanwhile in Yen Bai and Bac Giang Provinces, heavy flooding caused by downpours resulted in traffic disruptions on Monday morning.
