A Vietnamese elementary school teacher has been suspended for beating a student with a ruler over her failure to solve a math problem.

Bui Chi Tuyen, the teacher in question, has been seconded to another job at Tan An Elementary School in Vinh Cuu District, located in the southern province of Dong Nai, headmaster Le Trong Vien said.

“Tuyen has been teaching at Tan An Elementary School for 10 years. He has admitted his fault and was willing to be subject to any punishment,” Principal Vien elaborated.

In his report, the teacher said that he hit D. with a wooden ruler as he was angered after the young student failed to solve a math problem.

P.T.D., a fifth-grade student, had reported being scolded and bruised by Tuyen.

D. stated that she had been beaten on the shoulders and buttocks with a ruler by her math teacher.

According to D.’s mother, the young girl came home from school on Friday evening before she started crying and recalling the incident.

Several of D.’s classmates also arrived at her home later the same day to tell the family that she had been brutally punished by the teacher.

Members of the school board have come to D.’s house to apologize to the student and her family, Vien continued, adding that the incident has been reported to the local bureau of education.
